The story goes that Vincent Van Gogh ate yellow paint to feel happy inside, he claimed yellow to be the happiest colour. Similarly, advertising companies like to use red to attract attention and blue to instill trust, without consuming paint, of course.
I like green. So which color is the best to convey your message?
The answer is not that clear-cut, it depends on what the colour is supposed to achieve.
Amplifiers have a similar messaging dilemma. The type of amp to use and the power you need are dictated by what you are trying to achieve.
It is a common misconception that if you double the power of an amplifier, you double the volume, not true, the volume would only increase marginally, by about 3 DB. To put it into perspective, 3 DB (decibel) is about the minimum required to detect a difference in volume. Do you want to double the volume? Get 10 times the power!
Matching an amplifier to a speaker is more art than science, as stereotyping (pardon the pun) tube amps with horn-loaded speakers and class D amps with transmission line speakers can produce very uneven results. To evoke a familiar guideline, pairing red wines with red meat isn’t always a given! Some white wine will pair better with red meat, in some instances. Hence, the importance of a dealer you can trust, an experienced guide in pairing in an audio jungle safari is recommended. Specs are only meaningful when used in context, let me explain…Two automobiles, both having 200 horsepower should be equally as powerful. Let’s now add a load, the first one weighs 2000 lb, the second one 4000 lb. are they still equally as powerful?
Amp’s specs without a load (speaker) have the same problems.
